Goodman family lore

About

This project attempts to trace the heritage of the Goodman Family (and related families). There are several unrelated Goodman lines, ours descends from Johann Michael Guthmann who was born in 1694 and immigrated to the American Colony of Pennsylvania in 1720. Within a generation the family had anglicized its name to Goodman and participated in the revolutionary war. This project is less about genealogy and more about collecting the heritage; we’re interested in stories, recipes, sayings, superstitions, and pictures.  Our Goodman ancestors have been pioneers, affluent planters, patriots, horse traders, private bankers, modest farmers, and craftsmen.

Are you a Goodman? Do you descend from Johann Michael Guthmann? This is not a substantial genealogical research project but genealogy plays a part of it. Michael’s heirs established themselves in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Texas, Indiana, Tennessee, Lousiana, and Arkansas. For a list of counties associated with these states along with genealogic descent notes please see the Participate page. If you descend from the Goodman family and live in one of our counties or regions then we want to hear from you. If we’re not related by blood we’re still related by name and share a common heritage of the region.

Hello, I am trying to trace some of my grandmothers family. Her name was Ellen Mae Goodman, born 1907, died 1986, she married Robert Glenn Martin born 1906 died 1987. They resided in Sherrills Ford North Carolina. I know that grandmothers family was big, she had a brother James Martin who was in WWII, and I think a sister named Fannie. They were married December 24, ? and died with in 3 months of each other. I can’t find any type of connections on the web site, thought maybe you might be some kin. Thanks, look forward to hearing from you.

      Hi Lisa

I know several distinct Goodman families including ours have had ties to North Carolina. Catawaba county isn’t too far from Mecklinburg and Cabbrarus counties where our particular families had settled during colonial and post revolutionary times.
