Descended from Royalty.

Abraham Goodman married Martha Woolery who has reportedly been described in a local history book as descending from royalty. Martha’s mother was Hannah Susannah Todd whose family had been in the American colonies since the seventeenth century originating with Joseph Tudor Todd who lived in Bermuda before immigrating to Philadelphia. They are supposedly descended from an illegitimate child of the Tudor dynasty and seemed to have been a prominent colonial family.

Abraham was born around 1820 and briefly served in the civil war on the Union side. He was the son of Indiana pioneer Jacob Goodman Jr. and grandson of Kentucky Planter Jacob Goodman Sr. Martha and Abraham had at least eight children together whose heirs can still be found in Lawrence, Sullivan, Monroe, and Owen counties Indiana.

Character can’t be bought.

Thurman S. Goodman AKA Skinny was born in 1908, five generations removed from Indiana pioneer Jacob Goodman Jr. Thurman worked as a union painter, belonging to Local 244 of Bloomington. Thurman was known for his honesty and his compassion for the well being of his co-workers. Thurman supplemented his income by working as a Taxi driver during the winters. Because work slowed down in the winter Thurman often rejected (painting) jobs because he believed his fellow union members needed the work more than he did. They tried on several occasions to elect him president of the union because of his honesty, compassion, and sacrifice. Thurman rejected every request and every offer because he wasn’t interested in politics or serving an administrative position. Thurman’s son Don recounts that he easily rejected such offers despite their modest income and the financial benefits such a position would incur.

Col. Goodman’s secret BBQ Sauce

Nothing beats food slow cooked with smoke and real hardwood coals. I’ve been working for several years at the ultimate BBQ sauce recipe. Well I’ve developed a few and my favorite is a simple infusion of vinegar cider, ground mustard, dash of ketchup, shot of worcestershire sauce, paprika, fresh ground pepper, salt, minced garlic, and onion powder. I really don’t have a set recipe for this - I just whip it up with whatever adjustments seem inspired by the moment. A secret ingredient I’ve been employing in all my sauces is a smoked dried ground habanero powder. If employed just right it gives a spiked finish without being hot – just a pinch is all that’s needed.

The recipe I’m going to give here is far from being my favorite but I do whip it up occasionally to impress friends. This is a Kansas style sauce which is what you buy at the super market and that’s why I make it. If it taste like you could have bought it at the store it’s got to be good right? My instructions above will satisfy the barbeque aficionado much better but to impress friends try this.

Makes 3-4 cups of BBQ sauce

1 can of tomato paste (6 ounces)

Half a cup of Ketchup

Fourth a cup of mustard

Fourth a cup of Worcestershire sauce

Fourth a cup of vinegar

1 teaspoon of concentrated lemon juice

Half a cup of brown sugar

1 teaspoon of ginger

1 teaspoon of garlic powder

1 teaspoon of onion powder

1 teaspoon of black pepper

1 teaspoon of paprika

1 teaspoon of chili powder

1 teaspoon of salt

1-2 teaspoons of liquid smoke

Thin with apple juice to desired consistency

Add vinegar, Ketchup, tomato paste, and dash of apple juice to a large sauce pan and blend together over medium heat. Add spices, lemon juice, and liquid smoke and thin with apple juice as needed until mixture comes to a boil then turn off heat stir and let sit until cool – can in mason jar. Sauce will keep three to four weeks in the refrigerator. For extra tang you can substitute apple juice with grape juice and for extra sweetness you can add two or three tablespoons of honey.

Killed at Gettysburg

Corporal Charles M Goodman was killed in the battle of Gettysburg. Charles was the son of Hiram senior and fifth generation from Johann Michael. Corporal Charles was in Company H of the 17th infantry of the Northern Virginia Army. Also serving Company H was Lieutenant A.G. Goodman

There were other members of our family who served at Gettysburg (at least one more casualty) and many other cousins served the war. More stories to come.

Jacob Goodman Jr. (the son of Jacob Sr.) married Margaret (Peggy) Hagan who was the daughter of Arthur Hagan. More precisely she was the daughter of Red Arthur, AKA Red Art.

There were in fact two brothers named Arthur. One had black hair and one had red hair so to distinguish them one was called Black Art and the other called Red Art. Both were born in Ireland but the eldest Arthur was kidnapped and forced to work on a ship and eventually escaped to New York. The parents believing Arthur had been killed had another child and named him in honor of the senior brother who had gone missing. After A few years the family migrated to America and rediscovered their lost son – the elder Arthur was black art.

Black Art migrated to Barren County (an area that is now part of Monroe County). He camped and lived in a cave until he could build a house.

The early records of Monroe/Barren counties reportedly show two Arthur Hagan’s distinguished by an R or a B.

Jacob Joab Goodman is credited with being a pioneer of Monroe County Kentucky. He owned most of the land composing Fountain Run. Jacob donated the property for the Missionary Baptist church. The stream that circles Fountain Run was named Jakes Branch in his honor. Reports of a will indicate he was a slave owner and planter. A paper by Sandi Gordin claims he was involved with various enterprises and had the strength of an Atlas. Jake had thirty two children and his heirs played an important role in the early community.
